Kakikomi

Kanji lookup for Android

Draw any kanji. Keep reading.

Kakikomi floats a small seal over whatever you are reading. Tap it, draw the character you are stuck on, and its readings, meaning and example words appear — your book stays open right behind it.

Free. Android 12 and newer. Made for tablets, works on phones.

A tablet showing a Japanese novel. The word for cat is underlined. A small red seal floats at the edge of the screen, and beside it a panel shows the kanji for cat, drawn by hand, with its readings ビョウ and ねこ and example words.

You can't type what you can't read.

An unfamiliar kanji has no reading you know — and without the reading, no keyboard will produce it. So you draw it instead, right where you met it.

  1. Tap the seal

It floats over your e-reader, PDF, browser or chat. Move it wherever it is out of the way.

  2. Draw the character

With a finger or a stylus. Candidates appear while you write, often before the last stroke.

  3. Read on

Readings, meaning, example words and the verbs it appears in. Close the panel and you are exactly where you were.

Everything happens on your device.

No account, no network needed for looking things up, no waiting.

Handwriting recognition

Runs on the device and updates with every stroke. Works for single kanji and for whole words.

A complete dictionary, offline

12,633 kanji and 218,830 words from KANJIDIC2 and JMdict. On and kun readings, stroke count, school grade.

Whole sentences, too

Select text in any app and send it to Kakikomi from the selection menu. Into English or German, with furigana.

Flashcards from your reading

Save any character, word or sentence. Review with spaced repetition — swipe right if you knew it.

Anki, if you use it

Export your decks in the Kaishi 1.5k note format and drop them straight into your collection.

Hear it

Words and readings read aloud by your device's own speech engine.

It reads nothing from the app beneath it.

The bubble draws its own window and has no access to what is behind it. That is not a setting — Android simply does not give it that access.

Questions

Why does it need “Display over other apps”?

Because floating over what you read is what the app does. Android grants this only in system settings; Kakikomi explains why before sending you there, and you can stop the bubble any time from its menu or the notification.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. Handwriting recognition, the dictionary, furigana and flashcards all work offline. Translation works offline too, once the language model has been downloaded.

Which devices?

Android 12 and newer. Kakikomi was designed on a tablet with a stylus — that is where it shines — but it works on phones as well.

Is it only for kanji?

No. You can write whole words by hand, paste or select full sentences, and save all of it as flashcards.
